“May we live to say that we saw the day
But for now we’ll live on hope.”
– Carrie Newcomer, “Air and Smoke”

The marsh in winter

The marsh in winter

May you be blessed
to see the ripe apple on the winter bough,
the golden lily on the shriveled stalk,
the yellow cowslip in frozen marshes.
May you see feasts in empty bowls.

May you be blessed
to hear gamboling cubs in coyotes’ mating songs,
the antiphony of hermit thrush in the silence of snow,
the rustle of leaves in a fallen maple seed.
And may these things come to pass.

The marsh in springtime; the flowers are marsh marigold, sometimes known as cowslip.
